Much of the UK is made up of chalk or limestone, and chemically these rocks are largely calcium carbonate. Rainfall and rivers dissolve a little of the calcium carbonate and "hard water" is caused by these dissolved calcium salts in the water. Lime scale is deposited around your home where "hard water" is heated or agitated. A simple way to spot lime scale in the home is by looking at the elements in your kettle, in hard water areas these elements will be covered with a white 'chalky' deposit, this can also be found on your shower heads and taps.
Your kettle is not the only place water is heated or agitated. This will happen unseen in many water dependent appliances such as boilers, immersion heaters, shower units, and the pipes within these units and in your house. Where lime scale is deposited in pipes it reduces the flow of water, this will be more obvious in shower units, where over time flow rates can decrease substantially. However, when lime scale forms in boilers and heaters it insulates the water from the heat source thus reducing the boilers efficiency, which in turn increases the amount of electricity or gas required.
